Beautiful City, but Expensive

09/23/13
Zurich is a nice city, but can be very expensive - even for Switzerland's standards. I would spend a day or two here, then venture out to some of the nearby cities. Here are some of my suggestions for Zurich:

Sights:
- Zurichsee: In the summer, the lake is the place to be. Swimming in the lake is a refreshing way to enjoy it. I would also suggest renting a boat or taking a boat tour.
- Explore Old Town: Full of Medieval houses and narrow lanes. When in Old Town check out these sights.
1) The Limmat River. And venture up to the Lindenhof, This square sits on a hill, great views of the Limmat River.
2) St Peterskirche which boasts the largest clock face in Europe.
3) Grossmünster: The double towers of the Grossmünster (Great Minster) are Zurich's landmark. According to legend, Charlemagne built the towers at the location where the graves of the city saints Felix and Regula were discovered.
4) Fraumünster (Minster of Our Lady), which is known for its stained glass windows by Giacometti and Chagall.

Cool thing to do: Check out Frau Gerolds Garten: A Bohemian oasis which houses bars, a restaurant, a couple of boutique shops and art studios and even an onsite urban garden.

Some restaurant picks:
- Ristorante Bindella at In Gassen 6: Great truffle risotto!
- Zueghauskeller – traditional food, but very little touristy
- Café Odeon: has been patronized by such figures as Lenin and Trotsky, Mata Hari, Thornton Wilder, Mussolini, James Joyce and various other colorful types.
Bauschnazli: Outdoor, cafeteria on the water – unique – traditional foods

I would definitely suggest visiting some near by cities when in Zurich, especially Lucerne and Interlaken.
