Description

For those craving a relaxing Mexican beach vacation but who want a slightly more cosmopolitan feel than some other beach towns in the country, Playa del Carmen, or Playa (as the locals call it), is a swank little town nestled in Mexico's Mayan Riviera. With a quainter feel than most nearby destinations, Playa del Carmen is small enough to walk almost everywhere, which means the beach is never more than a walk away. Playa is the kind of place where lounging under a beach umbrella, with your toes in the sand and a margarita in your hand, is a normal way to spend an afternoon. In fact, many bars and restaurants are right on the beach so that you don't even have to feel guilty about wearing your swimsuit all day...and night. The nightlife is relaxed and comfortable; international music mingles with Mexican and the ever-entertaining Salsa at local restaurants, bars, and lounges. If you feel like exploring a bit, public transportation makes it easy to visit ruins or neighboring hot-spots like Cozumel and Cancun, though with the Caribbean view that you'll have on the Playa beaches, you may not be able to tear yourself away from your beach chair.

    The Mayans Got It Wrong...

    09/21/13
So, the world didn't end when the Mayan Calendar ran out. Had you taken a trip to Playa Del Carmen, you would have been educated a bit on Mayan history and would have saved yourself months of sweating it over the impending apocalypse! This trip has the perfect balance of relaxing on the beach and adventure through ancient ruins. Can't decide between relaxation and exploration? Plan a trip to Playa Del Carmen and do both!

I love this city. Great shopping, both name brands and tourist junk. Beautiful beaches, great weather, and a great area to learn about the Mayan culture.
