Ponce may not be the biggest city in Puerto Rico, but it doesn't let anyone bully it around. Dating back to the late 17th century, Ponce has spent millions on preserving its colonial core. The homes, churches, fountains, and even fire stations will make you feel like you've stepped back in time a few hundred years. Though a simple walk down the street feels like a lesson in history and art, museums are galleries are scattered throughout the city for an even closer look. The boardwalk draws in the teen and young adult crowd, and--oddly enough--the elderly crowd, as well. A major manufacturer of just about everything you could want, from tropical foods and drinks to clothing and electronics, the shopping in Ponce is nothing to scoff at. It is nicknamed both "The Pearl of the South" and "The Museum City," and Ponce's relaxing, historically-significant old-town simplicity certainly lives up to its name.
